Sharkwater Questions and Answers

Questions about Sharkwater:
  1. What are some myths and misconceptions about sharks?

The most common misconceptions about sharks is that they are bloodthirsty monsters that will kill anything moving in the water if they see they see it. Before I learned more about sharks, I was scared to be out in open waters because of things like sharks lurking in the waters. I think really that when people first learn about sharks, they get scared by their size and large jaws full of teeth.

  2. What is the problem with this?

Sharks are in danger of becoming existent. What most people don't know is that sharks as the one the top predators in the oceans have help shape the things that occur in the marine environment; to evolution of species and their behaviours, to species population balance. Because of these adaptations they help the natural balance of the oceans and providing things that creatures and us humans get, important things like oxygen and seafood. But comes to one the problems; the seafood. All seafood come from the fishermen and fishing industries around the world. Sharks, to some surprise, are one of the delicacy's that can bought in the fish tank from the grocery store. The fins of any sharks are demand in some cultures like in China is that the shark fin has magical powers that will give abilities such as strength and good health that is seen in the terrifying creatures. In other places, people just hunt down sharks for the sake that “a dead shark is a good shark” policy.
TEDtalks: Brian Skerry "Reveals ocean's glory and horror"
  1. Identify one other BIG issue/concern that is presented in Sharkwater or Brian Skerry's Ted Talk.

The methods that fishermen use to catch fish that are effecting the fish population. There are two methods out there that some fishermen are using to catch commercial fish. The bottom trawler is a net that is submerge under water to the sea-floor where two steel doors that keep the net's mouth open by the current or it can be dragged by a boat on a line. Long-lining is a method that is uses a main line, normally around 1 mile long, that branches off to another lines that has 25 baiting hooks, making a total of 2500 bating hooks. They can set upon the ocean surface or drop to sea floor with an anchor. Both of these methods are known world wide and are used to catch large quantity of fish in one net or line; but most of the fishermen are only looking for one type of creature, which are normally commercial fish such as krill, tuna, salmon, swordfish and sharks. All of those creatures that the fishermen were not looking for are thrown back into the sea. A fishing crew could have sent out to only catch tuna, and use a long-line to do it; they could drag into their boat every type of fish or birds, and only one third of that catch could have been only tuna. These methods maybe quick and efficient of catching fish but wasteful and harmful to them.

  2. How can we (society) help/solve this problem/issue?
  • Help ban the use of long-lining and other methods that will only exploit and endanger marine life.
  • creating guidelines and responsible methods of fishery that protects marine environment and species but as well protect fishermen jobs
  1. How will you help solve this problem issue?
  • Support conversions and campaigns that are against the use of exploitative fishery
  • Help make others aware of how these methods effecting the marine life and why it's important to protect it
  1. Think of a question you can ask Rob Stewart when he comes to LFAS.
  • Was there any times that you encountered something humorous when on shot underwater?

  1. Watch one of the following TEDtalks about the ocean, or a documentary about the ocean and write a short summery about the information that was presented.
Capitan Charles Moore presents what has happen to the oceans and the marine life that is effected by the “throw away” culture of plastic usage that began after WWII.
  2. Identify the main concern(s).
  • The plastic that can not decomposed
  • Small plastic objects that float on top of the surface
  1. List some of the solutions that you learned, or think of some of your own.
